Looking Back at a Hard Beginning
My last post The Sunday I Felt Broken has a bit of a bleak outlook. Well, more than a bit. It is a very bleak outlook, but a very real experience when it came to one of my first Sundays as a new Sunbeam teacher. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check it out here.
I read the post recently and decided today would be a good day to write some of the positives of my new calling as a Sunbeam teacher. I don’t know who would be reading this, but it might be helpful to know that it does get better.
My husband and I still struggle each week with new challenges. But we are learning along the way together and today’s lesson wasn’t so bad.
We taught about Enoch this week and we wanted to get the kids moving this time. We went to one of our favorite tools for ideas: ChatGPT. It got our brains flowing with ideas for teaching the lesson using our hands and our bodies.
It’s the Small Wins
We taught them about how Enoch walked with God, so we all walked in a circle. Then, we shared truths such as God lifted Enoch’s city up to heaven, and used our arms to lift up our “City of Enoch”. Overall, the kids loved it!
After our short lesson, we decided to give them some Play-Doh time. In my last post, Play-Doh was a struggle and it’s a bit of an understatement to say I was overwhelmed. But they’ve been getting better at it! One of my favorite things about Play-Doh time, is listening to these kids share what they are making.

It is incredible to see their imaginations flow and to hear about how something they’ve made with their hands is actually a piece of wood, a standing light, or even a small cat. It touches my heart to see these kids creating things and enjoying this time to build something of their own.
What These Children Are Teaching Me
It reminds me of our Heavenly Father. How he created us. He sees our potential. Even if others cannot or even ourselves. But He knows what He created us to be. And we have a purpose in His Plan.
My time as a Sunbeam teacher has only been about a month. But it has been an incredible opportunity to become a better disciple of Christ. Those children have taught me so much.

I am happy that I can honestly say that being a Sunbeam teacher has already helped me grow a lot.
There is an older gentleman in my ward that I’ve heard was the previous Sunbeam teacher and was excellent at it. He had some tips and tricks up his sleeve that I am envious to know about. I plan on asking him more about it so my husband and I can do an even better job at helping these kiddos. Maybe, if his tips work well I can write about it, too.
