I Wanted a Gift He Could Carry, Not Store
Finding a meaningful, not-cheesy spouse gift is hard. I didn’t want to give my fiancé (soon-to-be husband!) something that would sit on a shelf and collect dust. I wanted something personal he could literally keep with him—something he could open on random Tuesdays and smile.
The Idea That Stuck
When I was 16, I was a Pinterest doom-scroller. So one fated day, I came across a post about writing entries in a journal to your future spouse which led me to read a blog about writing to your future husband. That lit a spark and so I started a journal. Then another. Now I have a few—full of teenage reminiscing, hopeful prayers, and honest letters from a girl who just wanted to fall in love.
For our wedding day, I’m turning those journals into a tiny, always-with-him gift: a laminated wallet-size card with a QR code that links to a private Google Drive folder. Inside that folder?
- short “mini-podcast” voice notes of me reading excerpts from those journals,
- little videos and photos of us,
- and a few brand-new notes recorded just for him.
It’s basically a pocket time-capsule he can open anytime—on a work break, on a tough day, or just because. It’s simple, discreet, and deeply personal.
How To Make Your Own in 20 Minutes
- Create a private folder.
Make a Google Drive folder and invite only your spouse’s email. Add subfolders like “Voice Notes,” “Journal Excerpts,” “Photos,” and “Videos.” - Record tiny love notes.
Use your phone’s voice recorder. Read a short entry (2-5 min). Name files clearly like “2017—My prayers for my future husband.” - Generate your QR code.
Copy the folder’s share link (restricted to your spouse). Use a free QR generator and download the code image. - Design a wallet card.
In Canva/Docs, set size to 3.5″ × 2″ (business card). Add a title (e.g., “Open When You Miss Me”), the QR, your initials/date. - Print & laminate.
Print on business-card paper or thick cardstock. (I used normal copy paper, but it would have been nice to use the business card paper.) Round corners (optional) and slide into a business-card-size laminating pouch. (I had letter size laminating pouches on hand, so I used one. For the sake of saving plastic, the ones I linked are better.) Laminate and test the QR.
My card text (copy/paste):
Front: Open when you miss me. Scan for love notes & memories. ♡
Back (tiny text): For [His Name], on [Wedding Date].
